Drawing upon recordings and writings by Dennis Severs, The Gentle Author has reinvented Dennis Severs’ Tour as a play performed by an actor.
Dennis arranged each room as a scene in a fictional family drama, inspired by the shadows of the past he imagined within the house. For aficionados, this is an opportunity to return and discover Dennis Severs’ creation anew.
The play lasts for approximately 80 minutes followed by a short Q&A.
Essential Information
- Please be punctual or early for the play. Latecomers cannot be admitted.
- The play is limited to an audience of seven, which means we cannot accommodate changes or cancellations. Tickets are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged or transferred.
- Please note that there are no toilet facilities at Dennis Severs’ House. We recommend the extensive free cloakrooms at Liverpool Street Station.
- One ticket is valid for one guest only.
- Guests must be 12 years of age or older.
- Content warning – the play contains references to genocide, suicide and slavery.
- Be aware that as part of the performance, the audience walks through the house and climbs a lot of stairs. Due to the age and character of the building – its dim lighting, uneven floors, steep stairs and other hazards – please follow safety instructions from the staff.
- Some spaces in the house are confined and – at times – you may end up in close quarters with your fellow audience members.
- Only handbags and small backpacks are allowed. We will ask you to carry these in your hand or wear them on your front. We do not have space to store luggage or pushchairs.
- Stiletto heels cannot be worn because they damage the fabric of building.
- A good understanding of spoken English is necessary to enjoy the play to its fullest.
For more information, please read our Terms & Conditions before your visit.
Accessibility
The house is an 18th-century building with uneven floors and many stairs. Sadly this means access is not always possible and we are unable to offer wheelchair access. Visitors must be able to evacuate the building unaided or with the support of their designated carer.
